Balbriggan, the country’s youngest town, will today launch free public wifi. The 2016 Census showed that the Co Dublin town has the youngest population of any town in the country, with an average age of 30.8 years. It has also seen its population boom by 94% in the past 25 years.
Today it becomes the first location on the east coast to launch free high-speed public wifi, following the lead of Galway which has been offering locals and visitors free wifi for several years. The project, which has been rolled out by Magnet Networks, involves access points being installed in local businesses and each point can handle 250 simultaneous connections. There are no limits with time or data usage and the service also has web filtering for secure access.
Stephen Brewer, managing director of Magnet Networks Ireland, said: “As the project is financed by giving local businesses the opportunity to sponsor the wifi and send promotional offers, local users and visitors can be directed to attractions or places to eat and drink.” Fingal County Council is also planning to roll out free public wifi hotspots to more towns and villages across north Dublin.
